What began as a routine traffic stop over a tag violation quickly escalated into a pursuit and shooting.

Police said an officer attempted to stop a white truck on Austell Powder Springs Road.

Instead of stopping, the driver sped away from the officer.

Officers initiated a pursuit of the fleeing vehicle.

During the chase, investigators say the encounter turned violent when gunfire was directed at pursuing law enforcement.

Authorities say Adam Hawkins opened fire on the first officer from the passenger seat of the white truck.

Investigators reported that four shots were fired at that initial pursuing officer.

The gunfire forced that first officer to pull out of the chase.

Then a second officer took over the pursuit.

Police say three more shots were fired at that second officer as the chase continued.

In total, seven alleged shots were fired at the two officers during the incident.

Dash camera video captured officers calling out, “Shots fired,” as the chase continued.

Neither officer was injured.

One officer described the suspected shooter as a white man with tattoos covering his face.

Investigators later identified that passenger as Hawkins.

Police said Hawkins is a convicted felon.

Cobb County police helped establish a perimeter in the area.

Powder Springs police also helped establish the perimeter.

And everyone inside the truck was eventually taken into custody.

Authorities reiterated that Hawkins fired from the passenger seat.

The full list of charges was not included in the initial report.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
